Axe, Knife and Saw

Assessment of Scouts ability to safely use an axe, knife and saw.

What to expect

During their Nights Away or session activities, Scouts may have need to use axes, knives and saws; either individually, or as part of a group activity.

As part of their learning, Volunteers will regularly assess Scouts competencies in Axe, Knife and Saw work. Scouts will be required to complete an assessment set out by the leaders to ensure that they are safe in the use of these tools, such as safe handling, storing and use of each tool.

Upon successful completion of these assessments, Scouts may sign and understand a document showing that they understand the dangers of these tools and that they will comply with all requirements.

If Scouts pass the assessment and sign the document they may receive an Axe, Saw and Knife certificate allowing them to use these tools on camp.

Should any Scout fail the assessment or not feel ready to take it they can undertake a refresher course ready for an assessment at a later date. Assessments will take place every three months. Scouts will also redo the assessment every six months (or at the request of a volunteer) to ensure that they remain safe and revalidate their certificates. These assessments will also count towards Scout’s Survival Activity badge under the knife work requirement.
